Types of Darts Games
301, 501, 701, 1001
These games are commonly called "x01" games. You begin the game with the number
of points specified and the object is to be the first person to reach 0. You
must reach zero exactly. If you hit a number that results in more points than
your score, you go BUST and your score is reset to where it was before the
current round.
501 Shanghai
This is a variation of 501 in which there is Double In, Double Out, and The
Shanghai Rule. See these items below for information about these variations.
Double Out
This is a variation that says that the last shot of the game must be in the
double ring (the outside ring on the board). In the "x01" games, it means
that you must reach zero exactly with a shot that lands in the double ring. In
this game, if you reach exactly 1 point, it is the same as busting, since that
leaves you with no legal way to score.
Double In
This is a variation that can be played on almost any game. It says that your
first score must be in the double ring. Until you make a shot in the double
ring, your scores will not count.
Masters Out
This is like Double Out, except you can go out with a double or a triple.
The Shanghai Rule
This is a rule that says that if you hit the 1x, 2x, and 3x of the same number
in the same turn, you win -automatically. The Shanghai Rule is not found in any
of the games except for 501 Shanghai.
The Freeze Rule
This rule is used in team games. When your score reaches zero, your partner
must have less score (be closer to winning) than your opponents' scores
combined. If your score reaches zero and this is not true, you are frozen, and
your score is reset to 151. If one person on each team reaches 0 at the same
time, the tiebreaker round begins, regardless of the scores of your partners.
The tiebreaker round works slightly different with the freeze rule in effect.
The team with the best individual tiebreaker score must also have the best team
score. The team score is calculated as the sum of the players scores. With
tiebreaker scores counted as negative, the best score is the lowest score. If
this is not the case, the leader's score is sent back to 151 and the other team
wins.
Cricket
In this game, the only numbers that matter are 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, and the
Bullseye. To win, you must hit each number three times (called "closing each
number") and then have the highest score. You score by hitting a number after
you have closed it out. Once everyone has closed out a number, it cannot be
scored on anymore. Hitting the double or triple ring counts as hitting that
number two or three times. The first time you hit a number, a slash will
appear on the scoreboard below that number. The second time, the slash will
turn into an X. The third time, it will turn into a circle, and you have
closed that number.
Cutthroat Cricket
Instead of gaining points when you score, the players who have not closed that
number gain points. The winner is the person who closes out all of the numbers
and has the least amount of points. This makes a great 3- or 4-player
game.
Doubles Cricket
Just like cricket except that the first score on each number must be a
double.
